Discover Dudok’s Influence in Japan
Travel from Hilversum to Japan without leaving the Town Hall. The exhibition From Hilversum to Kurashiki explores how the work of Willem Dudok inspired Japanese architect Shizutaro Urabe (1909–1991).
Urabe discovered Dudok’s architecture while studying, and was particularly impressed by Hilversum Town Hall. After graduating, he began working in Kurashiki, where his school friend and entrepreneur Soichiro Ohara allowed him to put his ideas into practice.
Discover how Urabe designed new buildings while respecting the character of the existing city. Rather than copying Dudok’s style, he adapted his ideas to the Japanese context and his own time. The exhibition reveals how architecture can travel across borders and create a surprising connection between Hilversum and Kurashiki.
