Mother Song II | Wineke Gartz

13 June until 18 October

Fotomuseum Hilversum

Step into Mother Song II by artist Wineke Gartz and immerse yourself in a world of image, sound and emotion. Created specifically for Fotomuseum Hilversum, this site-specific installation seamlessly brings together video projections, photography, textiles, sound and architectural elements. The result is a powerful experience that is not only seen, but deeply felt.

With Mother Song II, Gartz explores what protest and activism mean in a time of conflict and change. The work reflects not only the strength of collective action, but also the personal emotions that accompany it. Hope, doubt, grief, resilience and connection all find their place within the installation.

A key starting point is the personal archive of the artist’s parents. Historical protest imagery is interwoven with footage from recent demonstrations, including the Feminist March in Amsterdam. The result is a compelling dialogue between past and present, bringing the energy of protest vividly into the here and now.

The experience is further enriched by a specially composed soundtrack featuring driving drum rhythms, protest songs, birdsong and moments of silence. Movement and stillness, darkness and light, love and resistance flow together, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and consider both the world around them and their own place within it.
