Hilversum is not only the media capital of the Netherlands, but also a city where architecture truly comes to life. As you wander through its streets, you'll see it everywhere: from striking façades to sleek, modern buildings. But who are the creative minds behind these designs? Meet three architects who have helped shape Hilversum, each with a distinctive style, vision, and character.

Willem Dudok

Willem Marinus Dudok has left his footprint all over Hilversum. Nowhere in the world has this famous Dutch architect built more than in this city. Hilversum’s iconic Town Hall is his crowning achievement. To Dudok, designing a building was like composing music. Every detail, from the brickwork to how natural light entered a room, shaped the overall experience. And his vision can be seen far beyond the Town Hall, in the schools, homes and shops he designed throughout Hilversum. His signature style? Modernist, yet always on a human scale. Where geometry meets emotion.

Want to discover the Town Hall from the inside? From Thursdays to Sundays, you can join a guided tour and explore special spaces such as the mayor’s office and the wedding hall. To top it off, head up the tower for sweeping views. Tours are in Dutch, but an English brochure is available.

Jan Duiker

One look at the former Zonnestraal Sanatorium and it's easy to see why Jan Duiker is considered a pioneer of Dutch modernist architecture. Designed around the principles of light, air and functionality, the building was groundbreaking for its time and still feels remarkably relevant today. Want to experience it for yourself? The Zonnestraal grounds are open to the public, making them perfect for an inspiring stroll.

You'll recognise that same vision in the Gooiland Hotel. Its clean lines and expansive windows show how modernist architecture took shape and evolved in Hilversum. A celebration of modern design, right in the heart of the city. Fancy an architectural getaway? Book a room and spend the night in a listed national monument.

P.J.H. Cuypers

One building immediately stands out on Hilversum’s skyline: St. Vitus Church. Designed by Pierre Cuypers, this impressive landmark is full of intricate details and unmistakable character. Cuypers was also the architect behind the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, making his legacy all the more remarkable.

Built in the Neo-Gothic style, the church features soaring towers, pointed arches and colourful stained-glass windows. Dating back to the late 19th century, it remains one of the tallest churches in the Netherlands. Step inside and you'll feel as though you've entered another world.
