Hoorneboeg Heath

At the southern edge of Hilversum lies the beautiful Hoorneboeg Heath, a place where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Surrounded by woodland, it’s also one of our favourite spots for a walk with the dog. Along the way, you may come face to face with the area's gentle giants: Charolais cattle, which play an important role in maintaining the heathland.

Cross the heath and you'll arrive at Hilversum Airfield. Especially on sunny days, you'll often spot gliders taking off and landing. Feeling adventurous? See the heath from above during a helicopter or glider flight. And if skydiving is on your bucket list, this is the place to do it.

Prefer something a little more mindful? Visit De Hoorneboeg Estate, the historic estate that gave the heath its name. Surrounded by nature, it offers a variety of workshops, retreats and training sessions designed to help you slow down, recharge and reconnect.

After a long walk, there's nothing better than rewarding yourself with good food and drink. At Bij de Tuinman, you can enjoy coffee, hot chocolate, chai, soup and homemade cake on weekends. Or take a well-earned break at Brasserie Zonnestraal, where you can relax on the terrace overlooking the heath and the beautiful estate. For something truly special, raise a glass among the vines at the Zonnestraal vineyard and taste locally produced wine right where it is made.

TIP: Pick up the Rondje van de Tuinman walking package for your hike. Available every Saturday and Sunday from the coffee cart at Bij de Tuinman, it includes a walking route and refreshments for the road. Be sure to reserve at least one day in advance.

So... when will you spot the heathland's grazing giants?
