KERK-kas / Gesamtkunstwerk

Diederick Crow's Field | Kay Peters | Rob Romarius

This Gesamtkunstwerk on Wharf 35 was created in the cold first months of 2017. Artist Diederick Kraaijeveld still had a large pile of old window frames, and 'uomo universale' Kay Peters (who can build, is a biochemist and knows all about plants and flowers) and 'iron man' Rob Romarius decided to roll up their sleeves and built this greenhouse. In a few weeks, the greenhouse was up. Because Kraaijeveld wanted to turn it into an American church (in America one turns an ordinary house into a church by putting a tower on the roof), a church tower was made. With the help of kite-surfer and rock climber Bram Bast, the tower was installed on the greenhouse and the Kerk-kas was born.

Completing the CHURCH-Greenhouse was just the beginning of a new flowering garden. Many hours were spent plowing the soil, planting and sowing the crops, laying the tile paths (of course only with found materials), and maintaining the garden by Kay and Rob. And after all the hard work the garden is finally there. In summer, the flower garden is an oasis for visitors and insects. The greenhouse is a source of the tastiest tomatoes and courgettes. Restaurant Chef aan de Werf uses the herbs from the garden daily in their dishes. But the greenhouse and its garden are above all a lovely place for passers-by and for the workers at the Wharf, who drink coffee, have lunch, and in the evening, in the sunniest spot of the grounds, set up a BBQ. And in 2018, the church even formed the scene for the re-marriage of Diederick Kraaijeveld and his wife Aulia by mayor Pieter Broertjes.
