Brokeback Mountain

14 until 17 February

Filmtheater Hilversum

The sweeping epic Brokeback Mountain won three Academy Awards, including Best Director. The film follows the lives of two young men—a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy—who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly form a lifelong bond. The sorrow, joy, and complications that flow from it show that true love can be enduring and powerful. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, deeply moving performances in “a film destined to become one of the great classics of our time” (Clay Smith, The Insider).

The highly acclaimed modern classic Brokeback Mountain is set in Wyoming. Two boys who never finished high school spend a summer in the vast, lonely landscape tending sheep. There is room there for feelings suppressed by the prevailing social order. But at the end of the season, the men go their separate ways, in search of work and a life. To the outside world, both start families. When Jack finally sends a postcard saying he’s back in Wyoming, their tragic love story begins again—doomed to a limited existence during fishing trips in the wilderness.

In 2006, Brokeback Mountain received three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
